Gluttony

The Scripture actually has a lot to say about gluttony. Most will agree that the Bible teaches it is sinful to overindulge in food or drink. The Scriptures teach moderation in all things. If you are overweight already, your body may continue to stay at its current weight even though you may not eat very much. So another question arises. If you are overweight is it a sin to not do what you need to do to slim down to your ideal weight? Most people would agree that if they slim down it would make them healthier but if it's not a sin why bother?

The chart at the right is taken from the army fitness test. The maximum weight for men and women is given for each person's height in inches. For example, a male that is five feet, nine inches tall is sixty-nine inches tall and therefore should weigh no more than 186 lbs.

Scriptures related to gluttony are:

And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. Deuteronomy 21:20-21

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. Proverbs 23:2

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. Proverbs 23:20-21

But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1 Corinthians 9:27

(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) Philippians 3:18-19

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

Now the works of the flesh are... drunkenness, revellings, and such like: Galatians 5:19-21

But the fruit of the Spirit is... temperance [self-control]: against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
