Greek/Roman plays Vs History |
On Ancient History |
This paper demonstrates that the Greek and Roman plays are plays in the since of our modem Hollywood movies. Multiple historical records differ from the play or movie for what we call “artistic or poetic license” in order to make to story better. We will see that who fight in what war and when and where love affairs happen can be out of place or completely made up in order to make the play better. This is why we should not rely heavily on play for historical information.
Examples:
Roman poet Virgil (Publius Vergilis Marco) wrote his
play, “the Aeneid”, about 30BC.
Roman historian Titus Livius drew heavily from this poem for his information. He
states the girl was promised to Turnus first instead of Aeneas and Remus and
Romulus who founded Rome, are the children of Aeneas. But according to the
Jasher scroll (Ancient Jewish history) Rome was already founded during this war
and the girl was promised to Aeneas fist not Turnus.
Homer writes the plays “the Odyssey” and “the Iliad”
He mentions that the Trojans are called Dardanians. These are the same as the
Dodanim in genesis 10:4. In this poem Aeneas and princess Elissa who founds
Carthage have a love affair. However; Augustine mentions that in his time
everyone new about the play, but the historians stated the love affair could not
have taken place because they lived over 500 years apart. Josephus recorded that
Elisa founded Carthage 143 years after King Solomon built the Temple in
Jerusalem, or about 840 BC. Aeneas lived about 1200 BC if not further back in
time.
Quintus Ennius wrote a play entitled “the rape of the Sabines” very similar to Virgil’s account and another play written by Gnaeus Naevius. In their versions Romulus, founder of Rome, plans the attack during the festival of Neptune. But according to the Jasher scroll this battle happens years before Rome was founded. And according to ancient historians quoted by the Early church fathers it was before the man, Neptune, was born, let alone before he would be worshiped as a God.
