The Flood to Joseph
|
Ancient History |
1657 Noahide covenant
Noah and all who were with him stayed in the ark until the earth’s surface was
hard, coming out on the 27th Cheshvan [Bible Br.8.14].
They had been in the ark for one full lunar year and eleven days, the equivalent
of one solar year [Mid.Rab.Br33.7] The ark settled
on the mountains of Ararat in Armenia [Bible Br.8.4,
Targ.Yer/Yuch.5.2/Sed.Had] Noah and his sons named the constellations
[Mmn.Hil.Yes.Hat.3.7]
After the flood,
Noah was permitted (in a revelation) to eat meat (Adam had been forbidden). He
was also given a code of seven laws for all humanity to live by
[Bible Br.9.1-7/Tal.San.59b, 56a]
1658 Arphaxad born
Arphaxad, son of Shem, was born in 1658 [Bible Br.11.10].
Canaan once saw his grandfather Noah naked and drunk and reported this to his
father Ham. Ham had been concerned that Noah might have more children, so he
decided to castrate him. When Noah realized what had happened, he cursed them
both [Bible Br.9.21-27 Rashi/Tal.San.70a/Mid.Rab.Bam.10.2/Rashi
Br.9.25].
Arphaxad died in 2096 [Bible Br.11.13]
1693 Selah born
Selah, son of Arphaxad, was born in 1693 [Bible
Br.11.12]. Some say that Aner and Eshkol were also sons of Arphaxad
[Sed.Had] They were allies of Abraham
[Bible Br.14.13, 24]. Shelah (grandson of Shem)
died in 2126 [Bible Br.11.15].
1723 Eber born
Eber, son of Selah, was born in 1723 [Bible Br.11.14].
Some say the name “Hebrews” comes from Eber, and others say it is because
Abraham came to Canaan from the other side of the river (Ever HaNahar).
[Mid.Rab.42.8]. Eber (great-grandson of Shem) died in 2187
[Bible Br.11.17].
1757 Peleg born
Peleg, son of Eber, was born in 1757 [Bible Br.11.16].
Eber bad another son, Jaktan, who in turn had thirteen sons. One was called
Jobab and another, Abimael (see 22181). [Bible
br.10.25-29]. Peleg died in 1996
[Mid.Yal.1073]
1787
Reu born
Reu, son of Peleg, was born in 1787 [Bible Br.11.18].
Ashkenaz was born one year before Reu (1786) [Tzem.Dav]
He was the son of Gomer who was the son of Japheth, and the Germanic peoples
were named after him. [Tal.Yom.10a/Mid.Rab.Br.37.1]
Reu died in 2026 [Bible Br.11.21].
1788 Nimrod become King
Nimrod, son of Cush (see 1557), became king in 1788 (according to some)
[Sed.Had] This contradicts Jasher, which puts it at
1948
1819 Serug born
Serug, son of Reu, was born [Bible Br.11.20].
Serug (grandfather of Terah) died in 2049 (after his son Nachor I, see 1997
[Bible Br.11.23]. Nachor II (son of Terach) married
Milka his niece (daughter of Haran, see 1958) and had many sons. One was called
Utz and another Betuel. Among the children of Betuel was a son Laban and a
daughter Rebecca [Bible Br.22.20-23]. Job was the
son of Utz [Mid.Rab.Br.57.4/Yal.Reuv.q.Sed.Had.]
Others say Job lived many years later.
1849 Nahor born
Nachor I, son of Serug, was born [Bible Br.11.22].
He died in 1997 [Bible Br.11.25].
1878 Terah born
Terach, son of Nachor I, was born [Bible Br.11.24].
Terah died in 2083 [Bible Br.11.32].
1948 Abraham was born.
Abraham, son of Terah, was born in Nissan or in Tishrei in the city of Kutha (in
Aram) which was west of Ur Kasdim. If he was born in Tishrei, it was probably
before the 10th (see 2048). Terah had two other sons besides Abraham, Nachor II
and Haran. He later moved eastward to Ur Kasdim where Haran was born. Nachor II
remained in the land of Aram [Bible Br.11.31; 24.l0
Tal.R.H.l0b,lla/Bachya Br.11.28/Sed.Had]. Abraham's mother was Amathla’a,
the daughter of Kamevu [Tal.B.B.91a]. Haran, the
son of another wife, died before his father did. [Bible
Br.11.27, 28; 20.12, Rashi].
1958 Sarah born
Sarah, daughter of Haran, was also known as Yiska; she was Lot’s sister and
Abraham's niece [Bible Br.11.27-29/Tal.Meg.14a].
Abraham was hidden by his father Terah for the first ten years of his life, because the astrologers had warned Nirnrod (see 1787) that this child would become powerful [Tal.B.B.91a/Sed.Had] Abraham came out of hiding (with his mother) this year at the age of 10. Some say that she took him to Noah and Shem, where he spent many years learning from them [Sed.Had] He had already refused to believe in idols at the age of three (see 1996) [Tal.Ned.32a/Kes.Mish.Hil.A.Z.1.3]
Abraham came out of hiding (with his mother) this year at the age of 10. Some say that she took him to Noah and Shem, where he spent many years learning from them [Sed.Had] He had already refused to believe in idols at the age of three (see 1996/-1765) [Tal.Ned.32.1/Kes.Mish.Hil.A.Z.1.3].
1973 Abraham married Sarah
Abraham married Sarah [Mid.Yal.Br.15.78/Sed.Had].
1996 Tower of Babel
The People were dispersed from Babel after building the tower.
Construction of the Tower of Babel ended in 1996 [Mid.Yal.D.H.I
1073] Until this time all the people had spoken one common language
besides their own
[Tal.Yer.Meg.1.9/Mid.Tan.Dev.2/Tor.Tem.Br.11.1]
Ashur left the county because he did not approve of the tower construction, led by Nimrod, and he established the towns of Nineveh, Rechovot, and Kalach [Bible Br.10.11/Mid.Rab.Br.37.4].
Some say that Abraham recognized the concept of one God in this year [Mid.Rab.Br.64.4/Sed.Had] and others say eight years earlier when he was 40 (see 1958) [Mmn.Yad.Hil.A.Z.1.3, Hag.Mm., Kes.Mish].
Peleg died [Mid.Yal.1073] and Hebron was built during this year [R.Saadya.q.Sed.Had].
2000 Abraham destroys Idols
Abraham destroyed the idols of Terah and aroused the anger of Nimrod (see
1958) who subsequently sought to destroy Abraham
in a furnace. Abraham was miraculously saved, and Terah decided to leave the
county. [Mid.Rab.Br.38.13/Sed.Had] Some say that
Terah left Ur Kasdim with his family (see 1948)
in this year. [Sed.Had] Terah planned to settle in
Canaan but stopped on the way and settled in Haran (see
1948) [Bible
Br.11.31]. Some say that Terah bad another wife (see
1948), Pelilah, and had a son called Tzova,
who had a son Aram, who had a daughter Machalat (see 2218).
[Sed.Had.2075]
2008 Sodom rebels
In 2008, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah rebelled against Kedarlaomer, and
thirteen years later in 2021 he retaliated in the war of the five kings
against four (see 2018) [Bible Br.14.4/Tos.Ber.7b]
2018 Abrahams Covenant
The covenant (Brit Bein HaBetarini) was made with Abraham.
Abraham had lived in Haran for three years (see
2000) when he went on to Canaan, the
original destination, in 2003, and settled there. It was during this stay in
Canaan that the Brit Bein HaBetarim was made on the 15th Nissan 2018 (see 2023).
Abraham went back to Haran after the Brit and stayed there for no longer than
five years. If it was a full five years, then the war between the four and five
kings must have been in 2023 after he returned (see
2008) [Mesh.Sh. 12.40, Rashi/Sed.01/Tos.Ber.7b,
Shab.l0b./ Mrsha.Meg.9a/Sed.Had.].
2023 Abraham settles in Canaan.
When Abraham came to Canaan (see 2018), the Canaanite people spoke Hebrew, while
he spoke Aramaic [Ramban Br.45.12 Manscpt.Ed.].
There was a famine in Canaan this year [Bible Br.12.4, 10]
and Abraham went to Egypt, where on the 15th Nissan he had trouble over the
abduction of Sarah, his wife [Bible Br.12.10, Rashi/Mid.Yal.Br.12.68].
Some say that the the Covenant was this year or slightly later [Bible Br.15.1-9/ Mid.Rab.Br. 46.2/Rashi Br.15.1; 21.1]. However, this raises many questions [Mech.Sh.12.40], (see 2018). Abraham wandered through the land for a few months before he settled [Bible Br.12.8,9].
2034 Abraham Marries Hagar
Abraham married his second wife Hagar, who was the daughter of Pharaoh
[Mid.Yal.Br.12.68, Rashi.Br.16.1,13] , and Ishmael
was born in 2034 [Bible Br.16.16]. Some say
that Abraham was the first person to have white hair; others say he was the
first to grow a beard [Tal.B.M.87a, Mrsha/Mid.Rab.Br.65.9,
Yef.To.q.O.Hat.4.1556].
2048 Covenant of circumcision
Abraham circumcised himself and his son Ishmael on the 10th Tishrei
[Bible Br.17.24/ Mid.Y.16.80]. Ishmael was 13 years
old and Abraham was 99, and his 100th birthday was the following Nissan or
Tishrei (see 1948) [Sed.Had] Some say the
circumcision took place on the 13th Nissan
[Mid.Rab.Br.50.12] In an earlier revelation, Abraham and Sarah had their
names changed (from Abram and Sarai). On the third day after the circumcision,
three angels predicted that Isaac would be born within a year
[Bible Br.17.5,15; 18.l0/Tal.B.M.86b].
2048 Sodom destroyed
Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed.
Lot’s wife, Irith, looked back at the destruction of Sodom because her two
married daughters were left behind [Bible Br.18.16; 19.1,
13, 24/Mid.Yal.Br.19.84/B.Turim Br.19.26]. Isolated in a cave, Lot’s two
rescued daughters believed that the whole world had been destroyed, and
therefore conceived two children from him, Moab and Ben Ami (Amon)
[Bible Br.19.31, 37, 38]. Abraham moved to the land
of Philistines in this year and had trouble with Abimelech over the abduction of
his wife [Bible Br.20.1, 2]. He lived there for 26
years [Rashi Br.21.34].
2048 Isaac born
Isaac was born on the 15th Nissan of a Jewish leap year
[Tal.R.H.11a] Accordingly Issac would have been
born in the seventh month of pregnancy.
Abraham made a banquet to honor the occasion of Isaac’s development (some say
when he was eight days old—his circumcision day, others say at the age of 2, and
others at 13). To this banquet (some say) he invited all the great people (Shem,
Ever, Abimelech, king of the Philistines) and also his father Terach, and
brother Nachor II, both of whom came from Haran to celebrate the occasion
[Bible Br.21.8/Mid.Rab.53.10, Mat.Keh/Sed.Had.].
2061 Ishmael sent away
Abraham sent Ishmael and his mother away in 2061
[Mid.Rab.Br53.13 Mat.Keh]. Ishmael had two wives, who (some say) were
called Meriva and Fatima (or Maichut), and he eventually settled in the land of
Philistines near his father [Sed.Had] Eliezer, the
servant of Abraham, was a descendant of Canaan
[Mid.Rab.Br.59.9] Some say he was the son of Nimrod (the nephew of
Canaan, see 1557, 1787) [Pir.Dr.El./Me'am Lo’ez
Br.24.2].
2084 Isaac sacrificed
The "Akeda." Isaac was prepared to be a sacrifice.
Isaac was 36 or 37, depending on the day in Nissan that the Akeda took place
(see Nissan 2048) [Mid.Rab.Br.55.4, Sh.15.1 l/Sed.Had].
Abraham named the place of the Akeda “Yir’eh,” and this was added to its
previous name “Shalem” (see 1558), hence the name “Jerusalem”
[Bible Br.22.14/Mid.Yal.Br.22.102]. Sarah heard
that Abraham had taken Isaac to offer him as a sacrifice, and she traveled to
search for them. When she reached Hebron, she was in- formed that he had not
been sacrificed. The good news was too overwhelming for her, and she died.
[Bible Br.23.1, 2, Rashi/Mid.Rab.Br.58.5, Vay.20.2/Sed.Had]
Abraham negotiated the purchase of the Ma’arat Hamachpela in Kiryat Arba (see 930), near Hebron, and he buried her there [Bible Br.23.19,20] Isaac married Rebecca (see 2049) shortly thereafter. Some say that Rebecca was 10 years old at that time [Sed.Had] Some also say that Nachor II (brother of Abraham) died at around this time and that Avimelech, king of the Philistines, also died, and his son Benmelech was made king and renamed Abimelech as was the custom [Sed.Had]
2096 Abraham marries Keturah
Abraham married a woman named Keturah (some say in the year 2088), and they
had six sons. One of them was Midian, and the others were Zimran, Yakshan, Medan,
Yishbak, and Shuach [Bible Br.25.1,2/Sed.Had.].
Some say that Keturah was actually Hagar, who had changed her name
[Mid.Rab.Br.61.4]
2108 Jacob and Esau
Jacob and Esau were born [Bible Br.25.26].
2123 Easu sells his Birthright
On the day Abraham died (some say in Tevet), Esau came home tired (because he
had killed someone), and it was on that day that he sold his rights as the
firstborn to Jacob [Bible Br.25.71 Tal.B.B.16b].
Some say it was Nimrod (who was out hunting) that he killed
[Mid.Rab.Br.65.16/Sed.Had] At this time Isaac
moved to the land of Philistines and had difficulties with Abimelech the king
(see 2084) over his wife Rebecca [Bible Br.26.6-10].
2158 Shem Died
Shem died, but he had outlived eight of the next nine generations of his
descendants: his son Arphaxad (see 2096), Shelah (see 2126), NOT Eber (see
2187), Peleg (see 1996), Reu (see 2026), Serug (see 2049), Nathor I (see 19970,
Terah (see 2083), and Abraham (see 2123) [Bible Br.11.11].
Esau married Judith (daughter of Beeri), and Basmath (daughter of Eylon), both
Canaanites, in 2148 [Bible Br.26.34].
2171 Isaac blessed Jacob
instead of Esau.
Isaac blessed Jacob on the 15th Nissan and Jacob had to leave Beer Sheva
because of Esau’s anger [Bible Br.27.42-44/Pir.Dr.El./Rashi
Br.27.9]. He spent fourteen years studying with Eber, before he went to
Haran. Ishmael died this same year, before Esau married his daughter Machalath
[Bible Br.28.9, Rashi/Tal.Meg.17a].
2185 Jacob had the Dream of the
Ladder
Jacob went to Haran, and it was at this time that he had the dream of the
ladder [Bible Br.28.12, Rashi 28.9].
2192 Jacob married Leah
Jacob had to work for seven years in Haran before he married Laban’s
daughter Leah in 2192. He married Rachel one week later. He also married Zilpah
and Bilhah [Bible Br.29.23-30/Rashi Br.28.9].
Some say that it was in 1921 [Sed.Had] that Esau married Ahalivamah who was officially the daughter of Anah, who was the son of Tzivon, a descendant of Canaan. Actually Ahalivamah was the illegitimate daughter of Tzivon (her grandfather), and even her official father was Tzivon’s illegitimate son. (Tzivon had previously had an illegitimate son called Anah with his own mother. He then had Ahalivamah from this son [Anah's] wife) [Bible Br.36.2, Rashi].
2195 Levi born
Levi was born on the 16th Nissan 2195 [Bible
Sh.6.16,Mid.Yal.1].
Reuben, the oldest son of Jacob, was born on the 14th Kislev.
Shimon was born on the (21st or) 28th Tevet, Judah on the 15th Sivan,
Issachar on the 10th Ab, Zebulon on the 7th Tishrei,
Dan on the 9th Elul,
Naftali on the 5th Tishrei,
Gad on the 10th Heshvan,
Asher on the 20th Shvat [Mid.Yal. Sh.1.6/Bachya Sh.1.6],
Joseph (see 2199), and Benjamin (see 2208).
Dinah was a twin of Zebulon [Ibn Ezra Br.30.21].
2199 Joseph born
Joseph was born on the 1st Tammuz [Mid.Yal.Sh.1]
Joseph died on a Shabbat afternoon 2309 [Bible
Br.50.26/Zoh.Sh.156a], the first of his brothers to die (see 2332)
[Tal.Ber.55a] All the sons of Jacob (according to some) died on the same
day of the same month they were born (see 2195) [Sidur
Yavetz]
2205 Jacob left Haran
Laban pursued Jacob when he left Haran in 2205 [Bible
Br.31.23, 38], and (some say) he also sent messengers to Esau to stir up
his anger at Jacob (see 2171) [Sed.Had] Jacob’s
subsequent confrontation with Esau on his return to Canaan was on the 9th Av
[Bible Br.Vayish.q.Sed.Had.]. Jacob was given the
additional name of Israel in a revelation [Bible Br.33.29;
35.10]. Dinah, who was captured in Canaan by Sh’chem, became pregnant and
had a daughter called Osnat. Jacob sent Osnat away because her uncles did not
treat her kindly. She was adopted by Potipher in Egypt (see 2229)
[Mid.Yal.Br.34.134]
2208 Benjamin born
Benjamin was born on the 11th Heshvan [Mid.Yal.Sh.1,
Rab.Bam.14], and his mother Rachel who died at his birth was buried in
Bethlehem [Bible Br.35.18,19]. Rebecca had died
around 2207 [Rashi Br.33.17; 35.8]. Some say that
Dinah married Job (see 2049) [Mid.Rab.Br.57.4]
Jacob and his sons fought some battles with the local Canaanites who attacked
them because of what they had done to the city of Sh’chem
[Rashi Br.48.22/Ramban Br.34.12/Bachya Br..35.6/Sed.Had]
2216 Joseph was sold.
Joseph spent his first year in Egypt as a servant of Potiphar before he was
imprisoned for twelve years because of Potiphar wife who (some say) was called
Zuleicha [Mid.Rab.Sh7.1; Bam.15.12/Sed.Had.]. Leah
died this year [Mid.Yal.Br.34.135/Sed.Had] and
(some say) that Reuben married Elyoram the daughter of Chivi (the Canaanite)
[Sed.Had] Esau had many children, and Eliphaz his
son had an illegitimate daughter Timna (from the wife of Seyir). Eliphaz then
had a son from his daughter Timna who was called Amalek
[Bible Br.36.12, Rashi].
