Origen
|
On Church History |
Origen (185-230AD) speculated on many things. Some of his speculations
would later be declared as heresy. The following four points are now known as
Origenism.
- That the souls of men had existed in a previous state, and that their
imprisonment in material bodies was a punishment for sins which they had
then committed.
- He did not believe in reincarnation
- That the human soul of Christ had also previously existed, and been united
to the Divine nature before that incarnation of the Son of God which is
related in the Gospels.
- That our material bodies shall be transformed into absolutely ethereal
ones at the resurrection. No physical resurrection.
- That all men, and even devils, shall be finally restored through the
mediation of Christ.
Notes:
- Of First Principles 1:2:6 - The doctrine of emanations is false,
- Of First Principles 1:2:10 - Uses the "Beza quote" Was, is, and is to come.
- Of First Principles 1:3:7 - Adam prophesied. Was this from Josephus, Enoch,
or Jasher?
- Of First Principles 1:5:5 - Uses the name Lucifer
- Of First Principles 1:6:3 - Free will point 3 is 6:4 ch. 8 angels… mentions Raphael, Gabriel and
Michael.
- Of First Principles 3:2:1 - Another name for Azael is Apopompaeus (adverter)
- Of First Principles 3:3 - Teaches the three fold interpretation.
- Against Celsus 1:19 -Genesis account of creation less that 10 thousands years is a literal
time period.
- Against Celsus 1:57 - Now there are not more than a handful of followers of Simon Magus in the
whole world if even that many.
- Against Celsus 2:59 -Other historical writers confirm the darkness at the crucifixion
- Against Celsus 3:25 -Even if some one heals or tells the future, it does not means he is
virtuous.
- Against Celsus 3:43 -Jupiter's tomb is in Crete. Quotes the quotation in Titus 1:12. this quote
was supposed to be in reference to the fact that Jupiter's tomb in on Crete. The
poem says Cretans lie and say he is dead and the poem says Jupiter is not
there.??? "the Cretans are always liars: for thy tomb, o king, the Cretans
have reared; and yet thou didst not die, For thou ever livest." Origen says
the Cretans do not say Jupiter raised or did not die but his dead there in his
tomb. Need to get a full copy of the hymn of Jupiter.
- Against Celsus 3:48 - Titus 1:19 husband of one wife. see note about Hipolytus and
Roman Bishops
- Against Celsus 5:30 - Angels guided the different peoples from the tower of Babel to
various lands. 34 - he explains how different countries eat different food,
and hold some foods that are eaten in other countries as an abomination. Cmp
Paul in 1 Corinthians 8 ect.
- Against Celsus 6:16 - The camel was an unclean animal because it does not have a divided
hoof. He compares it with Jesus statement of a Camel going through the eye
of a needle.
- Against Celsus 6:42 -The doctrine that Jesus suffered punishment and was vanquished by
the devil or that he paid ransom to the Devil is ridiculous.
- Against Celsus 8:22 - Christians in his time keep the preparation, Passover, Pentecost,
and the Lord's Day. They always eat the paschal lamb.
- Against Celsus 8:25 - There are good and evil men and angels, but all demons are wicked.

cleansing herself from every stain of wickedness
- John 10.11 - The difference of the Passover of the LORD and the Passover of
the Jews.
- John 10.13 - When Jesus said you must eat his flesh and drink his blood he

- Intro to Matthew
Fragment from book 1 - Matthew was written in Hebrew for the Jews and was the
first written gospel. The second written was that of Mark, under the
instruction of Peter. The third was that of Luke, under the instruction of
Paul written for the gentiles. The last was John.
- Matthew 10.18 - And Isaiah is reported to have been sawn asunder by the
people; and if any one does not accept the statement because of its being
found in the Apocryphal Isaiah,118 let him believe what is written thus in the
Epistle to the Hebrews, "They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were
tempted;
- Matthew 10.21 - "A ruler shall not depart from Judah, nor a leader from
Israel, until that come which is laid up in store, and he is the expectation
of the Gentiles.
- Matthew 11.12 - food laws are done away with which is why in Mark, the
Saviour said these things "making all meats clean,"
- Matthew 13.7 -Quotes Jesus saying “"This kind goeth not out save by prayer
and fasting,”
- Matthew 14.19 - The Divorce of Israel.
- Matthew 14.20 -Gentiles after the divorce.
- Matthew 14.22 - Ministers can’t have a second marriage.
- Matthew 14.24 - And even he who withholds himself from his wife makes her
oftentimes to be an adulteress when he does not satisfy her desires, even
though he does so under the appearance of greater gravity and self-control.
And perhaps this man is more culpable who, so far as it rests with him, makes
her an adulteress when he does not satisfy her desires than he who, for other
reason than fornication, has sent her away,-for poisoning or murder or any of
the most grievous sins.
- Matthew 14.25 - Now after these things, having considered how many
possible accidents may arise in marriages, which it was necessary for the man
to endure and in this way suffer very great hardships, or if he did not
endure, to transgress the word of Christ, the disciples say to him, taking
refuge in celibacy as easier, and more expedient than marriage, though the
latter appears to be expedient,
Others have said he also taught: that Christ was subordinate to the Father,
and that Christ paid a ransom to Satan.
