The Cult of Mythras

On Church History

Mythras is a mystery religion that began to be popular around 67 BC and reached its height in popularity about 300 AD. Since it's teachings were secret not much is known about their rites.

Most Mithraic temples were under ground. Most have the bull slaying scene painted on the walls. Mithras killing a bull accompanied by a dog, snake, raven, and scorpion. in some painting there is also a cup and lion beneath the bull. Some pictographs show Mithras being born out of a egg shaped rock with a snake entwined around it. The symbolism, like the orphic mysteries, shows the creator God outside the cosmos. This is also why the Mithraic temples were in underground caves.

The astrological symbolism probably represents Mithras leading his worshipers out of the age of Taurus (the bull) into the dawning of a new age. (Canis Minor the dog, Hydra the snake, Corvus the raven, Scorpio the scorpion, and Aquarius the cup) one can also see the sun, moon, and stars. Leo the lion and Aquarius the cup would have been the solstices during the age of Taurus. the "X" found in Mithraic art represents the zodiac and celestial equator. Where they cross would be the equinoxes.

Some of the early church fathers state how the cult of Mithras imitates Christian practices but in a perverted form.
