Legacy of Noah

On Legends

There are several legends about Noah:
  1. Ordaining the 4 Holidays
  2. Ordaining the 7 Noahide laws
  3. Retiring on the Isle of Create
  1. Retiring in China
  2. Being buried on Mount Ararat next to the Ark.

The Four Holidays
In Jubilees chapter 6, Noah decreed that four holidays be commemorated. The new moons of the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th months. These would be the turn of the seasons. The Celts kept the new moon holidays (Esbat's) but also observed the full moons in the middle of the seasons (Sabbat's). It also says God consecrated the feast of weeks. Here is a Partial chart of the seasons, this my help in determining the origins of the others.

The 7 Noahide Laws
The 7 Noahide Laws were commanded by Noah to all mankind according to the Talmud Sanhedrin 59a. The Ten commandments were for Israel alone.

  1. Do not worship Idols
    Worship one God alone.
  2. Do not commit Blasphemy
Cursing the name of G-d is forbidden. We must Honor and respect God in our speech.
  3. Do not Murder
death penalty for those who kill, administered if there is one testifying eye witness.
  4. Do not commit Sexual sins
Incest, adultery, bestiality, homosexuality, and rape
  1. Do not Steal
  2. Do not Eat flesh cut from a living animal
Ethical treatment of animals, eating blood
  3. Establish courts of Justice
A just social order to enforce the first six laws and enact any other useful laws or customs.

March 20, 1990 President George Bush signed into law a historic Joint Resolution of both Houses of Congress recognizing the Seven Noahide Laws as the "bedrock of society from the dawn of civilization" and urged our country to "return the world to the moral and ethical values contained in the Seven Noahide Laws" (H.J. Res. 104, Public Law 102-4).

Notice: In Deut 14:21 Jews can't eat meat from a strangled animal but they can sell it to gentiles, but in Acts 15 Gentile Christians can't eat it either.

Isle of Create
The Legend of Noah retiring on the Isle of Create is based mainly on a rough interpretation of the Epic of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh (Nimrod), in an effort to obtain immortality, travels to Lebanon seeking the one man (Noah) who survived the Flood. Nimrod is told by a prostitute that Noah's son lives in Jerusalem. Traveling to Jerusalem he meets Shem and is told Noah lives on the Isle of create, spending his days designing new ships. Nimrod then persuades Shem to take him to visit Noah. When he meets Noah on the Isle of Create Nimrod is told the whole story about the flood and the one true God.

China
The Legend of Noah retiring in China is a popular story from the peoples of that region (China, Tibet, Mongolia ect).
