Also called the Apocalypse of Paul. Two apocryphal books
bearing the name of Paul mentioned by ancient writers:
- The Ascension of Paul, adopted by the Cainites and other
Gnostics.
- Apocalypse of Paul, (This Text) spoken of by Augustine
and Sozomen. It is referred to by numerous authorities, one of whom, however,
ascribes it to the heretic Paul of Samosata, the founder of the sect of the
Paulicians.
The following are reasons why this work is considered fake, and not written
by Paul:
-
Intro - Supposed to have been found in under the
foundation of the original house of Paul the apostle.
-
1st Paragraph – Command God to burn up
sinners? The moon and stars talk to God. Holy men spend their lives fasting?
Sin is Matter?
-
2nd Paragraph – One must pay attention to their
body when they die so they can get back into it at the resurrection. You go to
a rest or fire depending on your works.
-
3rd Paragraph – Enoch is a witness of
the last day. At death the Christian is thrown into the Acherusian lake by
Michael the archangel then they can go into the city of God.
-
5th Paragraph – People are judged
according to their works. (contradicting Paul in Romans 4)
-
6th Paragraph – Some of the sins one
will be tortured for in hell are: not professing that the holy Mary is not the
mother of God ( qeotokoV
), and that the Lord did not become man out of her, and that the bread
of the thanksgiving and the cup of blessing are not His flesh and blood.*
-
12th Paragraph – Noah took 100 years
to build the Ark. (contradicting Jasher, at 5 years)
*The use of the word
qeotokoV became and issue
between Nestorius and Cyril of Alexandria, and was settled at the Council of
Ephesus, 431AD. Which condemned Nestorius for the use of the term
CristotokoV.
This has lead most scholars to believe it was written about 380 AD. The view of
the Eucharist having a substantial presence became the orthodox doctrine only
after the Second Council of Nicaea in 787 AD.
