Haggai 2:8 The silver is mine and the gold is mine,
declares the LORD Almighty.
1 Corinthians 10:26 for, "The earth is the Lords, and everything in
it."
1 Corinthians 16:2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside
a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no
collections will have to be made.
Matthew 26:7-13 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive
perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. 8 When
the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. 9
"This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the
poor." 10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why
are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. 12
When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare
me for burial. 13 I tell you the truth, wherever
this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in
memory of her."
Jesus commands here that every time the Gospel is preached the principal of giving is to be taught also. Giving for the sake of the kingdom is most important. We must have enough to provide for ourselves and our family and to be happy. There are lots of charities we can and should give to but that should never come before giving to Gods work, the local church.
Malachi 3:8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. "But you ask, How do we rob you? "In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a cursethe whole nation of youbecause you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.
The principal taught here is God blesses those who work in His kingdom for the sake of
His kingdom.
God does bless when you are obeying him, but does not bless you as much when you are not
obeying him, and He chastises you when you are way out of line, but that is a totally
different thing than supplying for the needs of his church.
God does not withhold blessing to punish but to train you, so he can then bless you all
the more.
If the church needs more money to do what God wants then he will bless the perfect tither
to guarantee the funds for the church. Even to the extent of taking away from the
inconsistent tither (not getting the promotion, raise, or getting fired)
We see Jocob making a vow before God to give a tenth of all God gives him in Genesis 28:22. Jacob here is promising that he will be faithful in building the LORDs kingdom.
God provides by using His people for the building of His kingdom. He uses evangelists, pastors, and teachers, buildings, and many other things. All these things take money to run.
Paul says you prove the Spirit of God is in you by the way you give.
2 Corinthians 8:4 Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the
privilege of sharing in this service to the saints
2 Corinthians 8:7,8 But just as you excel in everythingin faith, in speech,
in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for ussee that you also excel
in this grace of giving. 8 I am not commanding you, but I want to test the
sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.
2 Corinthians 8:24 Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason
for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it.
2 Corinthians 9:6-15 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap
sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each man
should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to
you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in
every good work. 9 As it is written: "He has scattered abroad his gifts to
the poor; his righteousness endures forever." 10 Now he who supplies
seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and
will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be made rich in
every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity
will result in thanksgiving to God. 12 This service that you perform is not
only supplying the needs of Gods people but is also overflowing in many expressions
of thanks to God. 13 Because of the service by which you have proved
yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the
gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14
And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the
surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable
gift!
2 Corinthians 8:13-15 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality, 15 as it is written: "He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little."
The benefits of belonging to a church and supporting it monetarily include fellowship with friends and family, meeting knew people, special ministries to children, singles, the elderly, young marrieds ect., marriage and child counseling, a chance to learn of God all he has for you and to avoid all the pitfalls in life, insurance of food and housing, brothers who will help you find jobs, and the list goes on and on, in other words you have a family!
In Hebrews 7:4 we see Abraham giving a tithe of all he had to Melchizedek. The Melchizedekian Priest at that time was Shem the son of Noah. Abraham we are told, in the ancient writings, studied under Noah and Shem for many years, learning the ways of God. He was paying tithes to his teacher.
After the Law of Moses was given the Israelites were to start tithing to the levite priests. Once the law was done away with, we now go back to the ways God originally intended, tithing to our teachers.
Those churches who are faithful in teaching the word of God will grow rich. They can then spend these riches spreading the Gospel in many ways, Christian schools and colleges, TV, radio, through books, ect. While those who just play at church will eventually close their doors. Paul also said:
Galatians 6:6 Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor. 7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
The proper attitude for giving to God is not to help as much as it is to make a statement to others about the value of the teaching. Worship is composed of the two words worth and ship. True worship is being a testimony to the value of God, his word, being in his house, obeying Him and helping others.
