Jesus was called “bishop” (1 Pet. 2:25). Peter was named a “fellow-elder” (1 Pet. 5:1). John was an elder (2 John 1). The church was exhorted to respect the dignity of this office (1 Thess. 5:12-13; Heb. 13:7, 17, 24).

Phoebe in Romans 16:1was a deaconess. So this office is open to women.
